Peter Seckler (Peter_Seckler on this site) has been playing D&D in one form or another since 1978. Although he originally joined the RPGA in 2000, he didn't get very involved with any of the official campaigns until the Xendrik Expeditions campaign came out. When he isn't DMing, he works with "something involving computers" and lives in a world dominated by 8-bit music, fuzz pedals, analog synthesizers, his 50cc honda scooter, and his unexplainably hot girlfriend, who also happens to be a drow warlord.

Of course, then you have to roleplay that your character hails from bleeding Akanul...

comment Does the DM tell the players when a skill check can be used in a conversation?
Skill challenges aren't actually the primary use of skills in conversation (although that might be how you are using them). Skill challenges are just a way to assign an XP award to a complex scene involving more than one skill check. Skill checks are just skill checks.

If you think he's talking about playing solo you have a different interpretation of what he said. (I realize that is what most people have interpreted). But it's a social game. A person can be alone and still want to get into the game, and that entails finding a group.

comment How should one properly roleplay a Kender?
So the answer I made here is based on the background of the question as written- he had already started playing and found out it was "wrong". But I'm saying, ok, maybe you weren't wrong. maybe you were just fine for your character.

That's true. I just think that people pick things like races based on a variety of reasons (examples: they like the picture, they haven't made a small size character yet, they wanted the +4 bonus to thievery to kit out a build, it' .. etc) that (in the end) might not have much to do with what that character race represents in the established fictional setting of the game. And - I think it's ok to do that, it's ok to approach a game just as a game alone, or without a preconceived idea or much research . In the end it's all good.

comment Has the “Points of Light” setting grown beyond the Nentir Vale?
(whoops, that closed out early).. but the Chaos Scar itself is in the same world. Supposedly this is between the Ogrefist Mountains and the Witchlight fens somewhere. There is no grand overview map, though.

comment What Do I Need to Know to Run a Mountaineering Adventure on Nanga Parbat in 1970?
This isn't about RPGs at all, it's only about researching real world background information. Is that intentional?

comment What happened to scrolls in 4e?
You can also reskin the consumables. For example- the Dragonfire Tar consumable is a thing you throw at someone that sets them on fire. But you could also call it/describe "Scroll of The Efreet's Kiss" and use the exact same mechanic. Except now it's a scroll. You can reskin anything this way- healing potions, potions of frost resistance, etc.

comment How can I modify a solo for a 2 player party in Dungeons and Dragons 4e?
Yes. Try not to get too hung up on the stats- because 1) you can change them. and 2) it's ok for the players to win quickly in certain situations. It's also ok for the players to hit every time, as long as they take a bit of damage in the process (which is why I only advocate messing with the to-hit bonus). The even statted method that we consider standard in 4e gives you a longer battle, but a longer battle isn't always the most interesting possibility. Relaxing the standards for monsters also clears the way for players to make more interesting characters and not be so focused on optimizing.
