Peter Seckler (Peter_Seckler on this site) has been playing D&D in one form or another since 1978. Although he originally joined the RPGA in 2000, he didn't get very involved with any of the official campaigns until the Xendrik Expeditions campaign came out. When he isn't DMing, he works with "something involving computers" and lives in a world dominated by 8-bit music, fuzz pedals, analog synthesizers, his 50cc honda scooter, and his unexplainably hot girlfriend, who also happens to be a drow warlord.

comment What can I do to improve as a player for Burning Wheel
It's separate only because I mainly wanted to emphasize the single idea of players helping other players find a spotlight. To me it's the primary point of being a great player, no matter the gaming system.

comment What does Fey Origin do?
The one LFR example I can think of was the pit trap in the feywild temple in AGLA1-1 where fey creatures can cross but non fey get dumped into the pit with the ant swarm.

Somewhat related to this is the 3.5 Binder class- because the Vestiges are the equivalent of NPCs that have roleplaying personas (and grant benefots). But if the Player doesn't want to roleplay them, and the DM can't be bothered to either, you have a problem. I love both familiars and the Binder class, so I'm looking forward to hearing other answers. I had this exact problem myself.

I'd like to add "In D&D 3.0 and 3.5" to the question, because this issue is somewhat specific to those games- earlier editions have a different benefit (plus it's an Opt-in spell, so it's a non-issue), and later editions handle familiars as a feat (so it's an opt-in like AD&D- and also a non-issue). But I defer to the community.
