Peter Seckler (Peter_Seckler on this site) has been playing D&D in one form or another since 1978. Although he originally joined the RPGA in 2000, he didn't get very involved with any of the official campaigns until the Xendrik Expeditions campaign came out. When he isn't DMing, he works with "something involving computers" and lives in a world dominated by 8-bit music, fuzz pedals, analog synthesizers, his 50cc honda scooter, and his unexplainably hot girlfriend, who also happens to be a drow warlord.

Somewhat related to this is the 3.5 Binder class- because the Vestiges are the equivalent of NPCs that have roleplaying personas (and grant benefots). But if the Player doesn't want to roleplay them, and the DM can't be bothered to either, you have a problem. I love both familiars and the Binder class, so I'm looking forward to hearing other answers. I had this exact problem myself.

I'd like to add "In D&D 3.0 and 3.5" to the question, because this issue is somewhat specific to those games- earlier editions have a different benefit (plus it's an Opt-in spell, so it's a non-issue), and later editions handle familiars as a feat (so it's an opt-in like AD&D- and also a non-issue). But I defer to the community.

comment Are there any megadungeons available for non-D&D systems?
I don't have links. The FUDGE adventures I am thinking of are "Another Fine Mess" which features a dungeon, and I think the "Tomb of Shrek Ironfist" is the other one.

I ran an encounter with 36 decrepit skeletons and it was a lot of fun. Overwhelming minions is hilarious, especially if the PCs have some area bursts.

comment Does it make sense to give characters free weapons expertise?
I liked this answer. I don't use the free "everyone gets's expertise feat for free", although if people take the feat I think that's cool. It's definitely not a requirement, though.

comment Effective Light Armor Fighter?
I just statted this up while I was thinking about it and it looks fun as heck to play. The At Wills of Sure Strike (which don't do a lot of damage, but hit fairly reliably) and Footwork Lure feel very swashbuckler to me. Sure Strike is "just toying with you" and Footwork Lure is for controlling the battlefield. I picked all lunges (lunging strike and the 'full extension' utility power) for flavor as well.
