I'm an electrical engineering student with a computer science minor at the City College of New York. I do programming work for the Metropolitan Transit Authority, and do a fair amount of hobby-coding for web sites and computer game modifications.

comment What attack rolls does a TWF 3 Rogue/1 White-haired Witch get?
Actually, pretty sure RAW is OK here. You do not gain the Grappled condition, which means a number of things for you (you aren't flat-footed, can attack freely, and so on), but you still initiate a typical Grapple maneuver, including entering the enemy's space, and the requirement on their Grappled condition (namely, that you maintain the grapple which includes staying in their space) doesn't change. So you can just walk away (no need to make a CM check since you aren't Grappled), but you have to let go in order to do so.

comment Does blind-fight allow a rogue to use sneak attacks in dim light?
Low-light vision doubles the area of bright light from a light source as well as the area of dim light thereafter, which can make it useful for this situation.

comment A system that models improved threat range of critical misses?
Pretty sure that no one who has even a 1% chance of hurting themselves with their own weapon every time they swing it has any business on a battlefield, wielding that weapon. So I'd suggest looking for systems that model characters that have little training and find themselves forced to defend themselves with weapons they are not familiar with. A system that focuses on trained warriors using weapons they know well would need to have extremely fine granularity to model something like this.

comment What alternatives are there for replacing the D&D memorize and forget magic rules
@SevenSidedDie Exactly: choosing to ignore balance problems is not the same as not having them. Your statement was that having a "non-char-op group" would have an "effect [...] on group balance" – it doesn't, it just means that the problems of group balance are less or un-important. And the fact that he specifically requested that the suggestion maintain existing balance standards suggests that the group does care at least somewhat.

@SevenSidedDie That's the one, thanks.

@SevenSidedDie Caster creativity is precisely the sort of thing that makes them massively more powerful than non-casting classes. It's only casters who do nothing by spam fireball and cure wounds that can appear to be balanced against Fighter and Monk. Also, the rules don't change depending on how hard you optimize; there's no such thing as a "char-op" game vs. a "non-char-op" game, there is just a continuum of optimization levels. And even at low ends of the spectrum, spellcasters have an edge and have a larger edge with this variant.

comment Optimizing a Warforged Fighter/Artificer for Survivability
Hi, welcome to the site. In many ways, this is a very good answer: clear, well-written, clearly based on experience. However, I feel that it is recommending some very weak feats (EWP, Combat Expertise, Shield Spec, WFocus/Spec), which I do not believe will help the question-asker, and in fact could potentially hinder him. This doesn't mean you should change your answer; if this is what worked for you then it's the answer you should provide. I merely want to point this out for consideration by the question-asker.

That spell point option dramatically powers up classes that are already the most powerful in the game, which he explicitly doesn't want.

Worth mentioning: there are 6 prepared casting classes in the official books. Of those, 4 (Archivist, Cleric, Druid, and Wizard) are members of the "Big Five" (along with the Artificer), the five most powerful classed in the game. It may be very desirable to not replicate that when replacing the existing system. Much better balance is possible.

I'm typing from my phone so I can't get a link to Spellshaping right now. Will edit it in when I get a chance, but I'll be extremely busy for the next week.

comment Can you use more than one martial maneuver in a single round?
Silly me, forgot to mention Time Domain for Improved Initiative. So Desert Wind Dodge is the only feat you have to take with normal feats. Imp. Unarmed Strike from Unarmed Swordsage, Blind-fight and Imp. Initiative from Cleric, and Adaptive Strike is basically must-have for Swordsages anyway.

Force Missile Mage (Dragon Compendium) can also do it directly.

comment Why the bad guys don't just teleport somewhere drop a bomb and teleport back?
It's worth noting that for some groups (though, admittedly, none that I would join) do enjoy "Scry 'n' Die" as a valid tactic (and much of the game comes down to protecting against it and forcing enemies out of their protections against it).

comment Why did D&D 4th Edition Remove the Size To-Hit Modifiers?
+1: "D&D is not a simulation game," -1: "as of 4th edition." It was true at the very least in 3.x, and arguably while earlier editions made some claims to simulationism, they didn't really execute that super-well. +1 again because it's just a good answer and I'm not going to let those quibbles stop me from upvoting.

comment Can a sorcerer cast other spells while in the shape of an Air Elemental?
@Duncan True but not really relevant. Eschew Materials doesn't touch expensive components, plus other classes can potentially cast the spell.
