I've been involved in one aspect or another of the adventure games hobby for the past twenty-five years. Started playing in 1987. (First game? Champions, followed by CyberSpace, the Iron Crown cyberpunk game for Space Master, their sci-fi Rolemaster spin-off.) Was hired by InQuest Magazine in 1996, where I started my editorial career. Since then, I've done work for Green Ronin, Malhavoc Press, Dream Pod 9, and White Wolf. I managed two different game stores in the metro Boston area in the 2000s, and am now working primarily freelance. Still gaming after all these years.

I have a weakness for good coffee and bad puns.

@Jonas True enough. Too late for me to edit, I'm afraid, but we've got some good answers and it's not been closed as a duplicate.

comment Excessively clever characters vs. narrativist RP?
@Shalvenay Oh, no. I didn't get the impression that the character was greedy or grasping. However, what you describe there does fit in with the earlier characterization of the PC as "self-interested" -- she "forces assistance" that may not be "wanted or needed." Rather than continue to describe the character, do you think that my solution and suggested course of action would be helpful?

That's just restating the question — she admits she's the problem and she doesn't know how or what to change to fix it while still keeping true to her roleplaying style.

@Shalvenay I can understand that point of view; my impression is that characters who are excessively clever tend to have exceedingly high standards as to what impresses them, and often keep those feelings of respect and admiration to themselves rather than putting them out where others can see. Moreover, since they're in scenes with your character, who seldom is seen to fail, it's hard for them to get the chance to impress you, since they're never seen outdoing or matching you. That might leave a bad impression. Does that make sense?
