I write computer software for a living, mostly in Perl. I give away lots of it. Share and enjoy!

In my spare time, I tell my daughter stories about Batman, read books, watch movies, play video games, and try desperately to play D&D even though nobody I know wants to.

comment What are the advantages and disadvantages of develop in play (DIP) compared to develop at the start (DAS) character generation?
I am the DM, but I often find that when it turns out that the evil duke is their long-lost brother for whom they claimed to have spend seven years questing... the player says, "Oh, right. I had a brother. Huh." It's a player/DM mismatch, which is why I've changed my strategy. ;)

comment Narrative Combat versus Use of Miniatures
This was my approach for a few years, and it worked very well. Sometimes we'd use a whiteboard so we could move the markings around, but we only did it once in a while, not constantly, and there was no measurement involved.

comment When and how should I get the players to cut back on their out of character chatter?
We have the same rule, but instead of a bell, someone will just "call bullshit." When bullshit is called, play resumes. If only one guy is pathetically calling it all the time, the game is potentially doomed, and the best thing to do is to have a real conversation about it. (Obviously, this is not for every group.)

comment Playing 4th Ed D&D for the first time, what should I read to avoid holding everyone back?
Ever since then, every time I read a new RPG rulebook, I wonder, "Why isn't there a library of mp3s of actual play sessions for all kinds of games?"
