I like the suggestion of "with a bribe," especially.

comment How can I plan, prepare, and enforce an episodic structure?
Although I can't apply this to my current campaign easily, it is quite similar to something I've been thinking about doing in a new one. I sometimes think of the silly "timer" from the TV show Sliders. :)

I'm a big fan of the West Marches, but what is not clear from your post or any of the many posts I've read is (a) how to motivate the players to get back to base and (b) what to do if they don't. (These are, obviously, quite likely to relate to one another.) Jeff Rients posted a random table of consequences, which is the closest I've seen.

Right now I largely run Basic D&D, but would like to run, in the future, at least FAE and Eclipse Phase. I've run a fairly broad spectrum of systems in the past (dozens, I guess), and am comfortable with the idea of using a different system if I get significant benefits.

I wonder why there's any need for relays or re-broadcasting, given that the most common carrier for communications is neutrino transmission, which have a range of 100 AU. The Kuiper Belt lies between 30 and 40 AU from the sun. Your reading of the rules agrees with mine, but leaves me still a little nonplussed.

Thanks. The pointer to FC p.78 was especially point-settling!

comment In calculating Basic D&D monster experience, what's a special ability?
Thanks! p149: automatic damage, breath weapon, charm, energy drain, fear, gaze attack, immunity to normal weapons, immunity to morale checks, invisibility, paralysis, petrification, poison, regeneration, spell-casting, splitting or summoning other creatures, swallowing whole, and spell-like or other abilities of similar potency.

I had clearly blocked from my mind the fact that the table calls for the DM to provide a small per-HP XP count in addition to the per-HD one. Yow! Too much math! Still, the table and its explanation has been very useful, so thanks again.

Thanks, that's very useful, and yet another reason to reread the 1E DMG continually.

comment Are magic missiles (generically) affected by the wind?
I wanted to provide some refutations, as I was sure, remembering, that I'd find some examples. At best, though, I found DCs for listening at doors and felt pretty sheepish. So I think I'm just projecting from older editions. Thank you!

comment What rules discourage point blank missile use in Mazes & Minotaurs?
I am accepting this answer at least until somebody finds a killer missing passage from the RAW. :-) Specifically, I have ruled that using missile weapons in melee combat moves one's attacks to the melee phase and invites free attacks from flanking enemies.

@SevenSidedDie That was my memory, too, but when I went to check my 1E and Moldvay books, I couldn't find it. I'm not worried about those, and I believe it's there, but if you have the citation, I'd appreciate it.

I just thought I'd note that yes, it is played. I've been running an M&M game for just over a year now. It didn't seem to warrant an answer.

comment What systems, if any, could emulate an MMORPG or CRPG?
I actually run a 4E game. :) I meant to specifically exclude 4E, as I did when I tweeted about this question, but I forgot. Oops! My primary objection is that 4E is, in my opinion, far too complex (too many enumerated options per unit per round), and combats rounds take much too long. I also don't think the difference in power level between levels 1 and 30 is great enough for what I was hoping for. Also, I was hoping to avoid any bad feelings from such comparisons. :-) Still, your answer fits my question! Thanks.

comment How can I improve one-off play with paragon or epic tier characters?
I created the characters in question. Although it would be nice to have the players do it on their own, creating high-level 4E characters takes an age. :(

comment How does damage outside of combat work in Carcosa?
It does seem like a straightforward way to do things, but it makes it extremely difficult, that way, to nickel-and-dime somebody out of his or her hit points. (This may be intentional.) It also seems like it would add a lot of overhead to otherwise very simple dice transactions. (This seems unlikely to be intentional, but Carcosa sure does love diceā€¦)
