Challenging is the default difficulty level for Focus power tests.

comment How can adversarial game mechanics be added to a game?
From the perspective of a GM/game designer looking to experiment with new ideas and wanting to understand what has worked elsewhere.

The only problem with the edit is that I'm not actually interested in D&D 4E; I was just using that as an example. :)

comment How can I encourage my D&D Encounters group to do more role playing?
While this may sound like a non-answer, I agree completely. My current large group (14-17) started as several D&D Encounters group and it got to a point where neither the players nor myself could stomach the constant crunch and the completely irrational setting construction (my favorite is the key that opens doors in succession only after the party has had each sequential combat...). I love the idea of Encounters, but the actual offerings aren't conducive to developing a narrative with the players.

comment Where would Teleportation Circles be in Forgotten Realms?
"Most portals no longer work. The breaking of the Weave destroyed most of the portals that crisscrossed Toril, because it destroyed the hard-won knowledge of arcane casters. Although arcanists have relearned their craft since the Spellplague raged, most portals remain nonfunctional or dangerously malfunction-ing, broken relics of a legendary past. " - FRCG

comment Is there any way to get multiple standard actions for Summoners in D&D 4E?
I'm aware-no offense taken!. The problem is that not all NPCs are technically monsters unless you start making blanket declarations ("in all the world, only PCs follow this set of rules") that I find cause players to break suspension of disbelief. Thus, the impetus of the question is not "can I do whatever I want," but rather "can I do this in a way that doesn't make the players feel like this walking, talking NPC isn't playing by a totally different set of rules." YMMV as to whether that distinction matters or not for you, but suffice it to say, it matters for my games (thus the question!).

I'm inclined to agree with Blake on this score. As I've gotten older, the adage that any of the rules can be broken by the GM really feels like it needs quite a few caveats if the game is intended to remain fun.

That's one of the few problems of having a moderator as a player in your game... :p

comment Are there any games that use dice pools of multiple dice?
Sorry Adam - I was specifically looking for games where individual players manage multiple dice pools of different dice types (though the idea of a single, global pool now has my complete attention...).

comment Games with mechanics for introducing new players/characters?
The intent is for new players, not players new to roleplaying.

comment Games with mechanics for introducing new players/characters?
All of the above. The question seems straigforward - what games have specific mechanics for introducing new characters/players and what ate those mechanics like. Not looking for advice, just a list of systems that provide mechanics for this aspect of play (I suspect it's a pretty short list).

comment Have there been any games specifically designed in response to Edwards' “Big Model”?
I'd appreciate an explanation of why this one is considered subjective and/or argumentative? As stated, it's a fairly straightforward, fact-based question - has there been an RPG built with a specific, stated design goal...

No, your latter comment was the intent (given that Beasat Defender triggers the AoO off of his beast companion.

comment How to roleplay a divine character in Ravenloft?
Most have taken the blurb to be a reference to Ravenloft. Wot announced that Ravenloft will be coming back officially next year, though in the meantime I'm using Jester's rules updates.

They popped darkness in a narrow hallway right in front of the mage in question; it seemed pretty reasonable as a next act to me as well :)

comment What are the “Dark Powers”?
Spot on. It's worth noting that their specific nature has never been revealed and the original setting authors have opined that their exact nature should never be defined/revealed (it's unclear if they ever specified the nature of the powers).

comment Are there any RPG systems specifically designed for larger numbers of players (10+)?
We're keeping D&D (most of the group favors it), but I enjoy bringing in aspects from other systems (whether it be just for advice or actual mechanics).

comment Are there any RPG systems specifically designed for larger numbers of players (10+)?
Most are there for every session, no requirements. Again, I'm not looking for advice on how to run such a game from any answer, rather, I'm curious to see if there have been any games designed for such large groups (so I can read their advice :) ).
