comment What is the optimal way to design a well balanced party
I totally agree with you Danny. Let the players play the classes they want to play rather than shoe-horning one of them into a class that is "needed" but nobody wants to play. No healer? Make healing potions more available. The DM can always adjust the campaign to fit the party so everyone has fun.

I'm not a great on-the-fly guy, but this makes it sound very do-able. Thanks for a great answer.

I tend to be too picky on character creation. For a one shot adventure, I really like your thoughts on character builder auto-gen characters.

@Pulsehead: I think it comes from having 4 kids. Sometimes, you just have to teach them it's not worth it :)

comment Status Markers for Miniatures Games
yeah, I think I'm going to head to the local hobby shop and buy some shrink paper so I can make some for my game this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

Some great links here. If you like the Dapper Devil kind of stuff, it seems like you could use some shrink paper ( amzn.to/bCmSua ) and create your own. You could use scrabble trays for holding them for each player character.

comment How does character movement translate to real-world speed?
If you think that many of those characters are carrying 50 lbs of gear, suddenly 9mph doesn't seem that slow to me.

comment How do I manage created content in D&D Character Builder
I've used that to add powers to my characters from another class, but how does it work for custom feats? I'm assuming they don't have an api or scripting support that allows you to actually make your custom feat add a bonus to your attack powers or anything like that.

+1 if for nothing other than the price.

If they fight for more than a couple minutes, then make it cursed, just to teach them.

comment Do any newer D&D versions grant experience for exceptional role-playing?
I can't take full credit for this idea. I got it from someone on Johnn Four's gmmastery mailing list 5-6 years ago.

I really like this answer. Less experienced players may be looking for something more tangible (like XP) as an immediate reward. Hopefully after a few times they'll catch on. Just don't over-use it or they'll be disappointed when that old lady is just an old lady. You also have to be an organized GM to remember previous good RP experiences to bring up later, and be able to do a good share of on-the-fly GM-ing.

comment How to handle a rules-lawyer player?
Excellent answer. Embellishing monsters will really throw him off his game. When he sees the orcs have red skin he might call you on it. When said orc blows fire in his face he'll start to get the picture.
