comment What is a “common metal”?
You could certainly interpret unmentioned materials as providing no barrier. Since it would have been impossible to give an exhaustive list, and given the variety of materials listed and their varying compositions, it seems to me to indicate that anything can block detect spells, the question is just how much it takes. After that, it's all about balance and the economics of magic (and counter-magic) in your setting.

comment AD&D 2nd ed Cleric/Thieves weapon proficiency
Actually, if you read the 2e PHB carefully, you'll find that "Clerics" are "reluctant to shed blood" and "allowed to use only blunt, bludgeoning weapons". However, Clerics are only an example of one sub-class of "Priest", which is the more comprehensive class under which you can construct priests who are allowed to use the edged/piercing weapons of their chosen mythos.

Correction: in the Multi-Class Combinations List in the stock AD&D 2e PHB(p.44), Cleric/Thief is listed under Gnome.

comment How To Divide Up Loot?
+1 for the "Let the players play!" vibe. Too many of the other answers here give the impression that the GM's role is to control the game. To augment a bit, if the characters are embarrassed by their performance, but the players aren't experienced enough to see how the game mechanics of these items could help them, or if the players are embarrassed by their character's lack of prowess, then educate them out-of-game. And if the imbalance makes their encounters harder, they'll look for solutions. The "deux-ex" approach is probably too heavy-handed.

comment Why “roll for initiative” in Pathfinder?
+1 for mentioning the monsters. Nothing quite so entertaining in a round-by-round initiative game than the collective wince of a party who've just been told the monsters go first this round...
