I started playing RPG's with a copy of the red box in 1983. Horror has been my favorite genre for many years, I run a homebrew Dark Conspiracy game every chance I get. SF and Fantasy are no strangers to me.

I've played many systems from the 80's and 90's and enjoyed them, for the most part. After so many years I've come to see the systems as being like coding languages, it's just syntax. The game is the same, tell an interactive story and have fun with friends doing it.

Ok, fair enough.

"how can I hint to my players that they should use it?" - it being kenning. Alternatives are great but please give the question asked some service in your answer.

comment What is a good system to play LOTR?
@waxeagle True, second hand would be the only way to get it. That could be "cheap", if one can find it.

Just a suggestion. I've found one person's "beginner friendly" is not the same for all. Rolemaster is really simple at it's heart. Just roll d100 add up modifiers and find the right chart.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle-earth_Role_Playing I played Rolemaster (which MERP was based on) but never played MERP so I can't answer this with first hand experience.

comment AD&D scrolls and learning spells
I don't recall an requirement that the write spell be used. The spell description says it is used to scribe spell the magic user cannot currently understand but there is nothing about having to use it in all cases. Can you give a page/book ref for that?

comment DM going from D&D 3.5e to AD&D 1st edition
What world setting are you using? If you don't have your own world you may want to locate a copy of first edition Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms. Having a good setting will help.

comment How fast can sailing ships turn?
Sounds good. You may also want to look at the follow up article in Dragon 130, it has an expansion of the same material for "Oriental Adventures". More ship types never hurts.

comment When GMing in a high-tech game world how do you handle potentially disruptive tech?
@DampeS8N The hotfix is just another tool for the toolbox. Used in an appropriate fashion it will be fine (and fun).

+1 for the hotfix! That made me LOL, my players are gonna hate you for giving me that idea!

If you want something to print out, another source to look at for inspiration on what data to record would be random planet and star system generators. donjon.bin.sh

comment Cheating on rolls as a DM to adjust the difficulty on the fly (or other means to adjust difficulty)
+1 for the "Come Clean" section, players should be willing to work with a new GM. Any that have GM experience will feel your pain and should be very willing to go along with that a time or two.

comment What can a player do to force down a flying creature?
I don't know 4e at all but regardless of what system you play in, anything that entangles and/or adds weight would be advantageous in bringing a flyer to the ground.
