Origin of the word “Soak” for avoiding damage
Following @javafueled's logic (which is also the meaning "soaking damage" has had for me), see also the purpose of a kitchen sponge - to "soak up" liquids. A character that soaks up damage could also be referred to as a "damage sponge."
