comment Can Clerics be Death Domain and Neutral?
@SevenSidedDie Again, the entire premise of the question assumes that permission has already been granted (or is nonsensical). Regardless, to say that the verb "ban" does not cover a situation such as "Can I play a Death Cleric?" "No." is splitting an incredibly fine hair. This is not a factual error. No change will be made to this statement.

@SevenSidedDie In #3, when there isn't a DM or a game involved, who the heck is he supposed to ask for permission? Me, because I'm a DM sometimes? You? Himself? Or is it your position that no one is even allowed to think about the Death cleric, unless there is an officially designated DM around to sign off on it?

Also excluded from this answer: Only Fifth Edition D&D material is allowed by default; that only Clerics can select the Death domain; that the sky is blue; and a small handful of other topics.

comment Can Clerics be Death Domain and Neutral?
+1 reading comprehension point to Airatome, -1 to @SevenSidedDie. Though it has nothing to do with my game. The question falls into one of three categories: 1. The asker doesn't know that the Dungeon Master's Guide is for DMs. 2. The asker's DM has allowed the option. 3. The asker is engaging in a thought experiment without a specific DM around. The DM's right to allow/disallow DMG classes is only relevant to the first clause, and I don't generally write answers framed to people who don't know how to play.

@airatome Please reread my comment to SD. I'm aware of that text, but it is irrelevant to this answer. More relevant is your alignment observations in your answer. I'll update for that later.

@SevenSidedDie The question of alignment implies the class is already allowed for consideration (except, perhaps, for alignment). Any statement of availability in this post is merely a reminder that the DM may revoke permission to use them, not an absolute statement on availability of Death clerics, Eladrin, et. al. (which would be tangential at best).

Added a passage to call out "paladin syndrome" a bit more explicitly.
