comment What's a GM to do when the party is intent on killing each other?
Actually, one of the most enjoyable and easiest AD&D campaigns I ever ran was like that: n chaotic neutrals who'd fight at the drop of a hat, played by a bunch of guys who were great friends in real life. Totally uninterested in playing through anything complex; I'd've had to use iron tracks to get them through something like that. So all I ever did was give them a trivial mission - really, in some cases as simple as a puzzle box - that they finished in about half the evening, with n-1 goodies in the haul, and let the fun commence.

comment How do I help my players figure out how to stay alive in a realistically-deadly sandbox campaign?
"First and foremost, a GM should always remember that the objective of a game is to have fun." Amen to that, and if it means a bit of fourth-wall breaking so that the GM can just ask the players what they want out of a game, and match that with what the GM wants, and quit with no hard feelings if there's not enough overlap, then I for one happily pick up the hammer.

HEF, I think that's worth writing up as an answer in its own right.

Nice use of a rimshot!

comment How to deal with players not taking things seriously?
I very much like this answer. Not everyone gets the same things out of gaming. Work out what you want, find a group that wants similar things, and treasure them!

comment AD&D (1e) Weapon Restrictions
Penalty? No. Flat-out prohibition? Yes, there is; see the table I refer to above. Not a permitted weapon? Not permitted. But there's no clear guidance given on how to handle it if eg an MU picks up a two-handed sword. I suggested a possibility above; it's not the only one, I'm sure there are others. You're right that the PHB says nothing further about the penalties for this, but that doesn't mean it doesn't say that it's not permitted.

A good argument - might well get used tomorrow!

That second reference is most interesting, thank you!

Thanks for that. Does the Italian version of the AD&D DMG say wha happens if the second roll fails? Is the trap triggered, or just not disarmed?
