comment Which role-playing systems might be best suited for use over a road-trip?
@aramis, I disagree. I wouldn't suggest everyone roll dice. But if you have a designated roller he can keep control of them somewhere. Or you can roll one at a time (4-5 dice is few enough that that's reasonable). Or buy toys at the quarter machine, throw at the toy, put dice in egg, and make a Pop-o-matic bubble like my GURPS GM did. Or let the person with the iPhone download an app.

comment Game design question. What sort of effect does HP as a resource have on a system?
There are different willpower pools for each stat. Different attacks target different stats. I'm hoping that combat will be about prodding your enemy until you can figure out where you have the better stat, but that will really depend on making sure the attack options are balanced with respect to each other. The other restriction is that a characters skill limits how many will points can be spent on any one check. I think it'll be interesting to see how someone with more points goes up against someone who can burn points quicker.

#5 is actually a really good point that I should keep in mind. I don't necessarily have to come up with something for the rest of the party. I just need to remember to ask them what they did while the others were out sneaking all night.

comment Should a character drop his or her weapon when going unconscious?
The way I've ruled it is that the weapon is dropped, but unless it's tampered with it can be picked up again as part of the move action to stand up. I figure the weapon is basically sitting on your hand and it shouldn't take a whole minor action to grab it. Even if it's on the ground, you plant your hand on the handle as you push yourself up. No need to spend a minor (or to action tax a player who already missed turns). But interloping enemies can easily kick the weapon away if they have the actions.

comment Diceless Math driven RPG
@tmow re: 012611 update: That's an interesting idea but I think it will require more math than will be feasible at the game table. I feel like that's the sort of thing best used in computer games. But if you're able to come up with some formulas that are speedy enough for the game table, I'd love to be proven wrong.

comment How quickly can fortifications be built in D&D 4e, magically and otherwise
That's true, but I'll come up with something more interesting if I think like a PC than if I deploy a standard castle. I'm doing it this way to aid the creative process, not to strictly abide the rules of 4e.

@Seven, Ok now I have to read Universalis. @Naurgul. I was planning on the simultaneous reveal method. I think that'll work for single resolutions. I'm worried about longer back and forths like combat though.

I haven't gotten around to testing yet. I like bidding as a mechanic but I'm worried it'll be a) too slow and b) too labor intensive for the poor GM (although that may be fixed by giving the GM a single pool rather than pools per NPC). re: Counter incentives, I was planning on making all bids get spent. This is because my bidding is based on Game of Thones board game's mechanic. I was planning on having a character's base skill be the limit on how many chips could be bid at once. So at best they could double their skill for a single check.
