comment How combat-heavy is Rise of the Rune Lords?
The ap is quite long and I don't really want to spend hours pouring over the whole thing to get an idea of the tempo. It could be fine in episode 1 for example, and then change drastically later on. Hence asking for input from people who have already run it.

Hi. Your comments on APs don't match my experience in Second Darkness, but perhaps that just happens to be the one AP that doesn't fit the mold. We were setup in a town and had no specific goal and did a lot of investigation along with some "management" activities at a particular place of employment. At certain key dates I would tell the players of things happening but really it was many hours of non combat. I read up on Age Of Worms and it sounds pretty interesting but probably too hard for the player group I have assembled here. Ill keep it in mind for the future however.

Yes. The part that is not really covered is, when is it fair to make perception checks. For example if the monsters are ready to go and you are not, maybe they are skipped. However if the monsters watch you at first and don't attack immediately, then a perception check might be fair.

Ok thanks for the great answer. I believe this confirms my thoughts. One other question. Should I mentally be telling myself, the 2 monsters have readied a charge action on somebody coming through that door? Also what if the player claims that there characters should not be surprised because they are in a dungeon and are expecting a monster in every room. Thus they would enter each room ready for a fight. Does this make any impact?

Though there is a nice write up here, it doesn't actually address the question at hand. The scenario is the monsters are already aware of the players, and the players enter line of sight of an ambush thats waiting for them. The Monsters are stationary and will be revealed by the light the instant the players step in the room, however they were ready for it so do they get the suprise still. That is the question. Also perhaps its as simple as saying they are readided to charge as soon as somebody enters the room.
