Jun 11, 2022 at 18:19 | comment | added | Peter Cordes | @Kirt: Indeed, the long-rest issue got re-hashed recently on Is casting unused spells in the morning legit? , including the game-balance implications of this hack, with a couple attempts at narrative explanation for why it can or can't be done.
Jun 11, 2022 at 17:00 | comment | added | Kirt | @PeterCordes To be fair, the rules are grammatically ambiguous about whether a single spell interrupts a long rest, but unofficial rulings from Meals and Crawford say that it does not. The SAC is clear that a single spell interrupts a short rest.
Apr 29, 2020 at 3:48 | comment | added | Peter Cordes | no rule forbidding spellcasting during a long rest. - more specifically, as quoted in Can You Concentrate Through a Long Rest?, you can't spend more than 1 or 2 hours casting or concentrating on spells. So waiting until just before the end of your long rest should be fine because the rules don't say that casting 1 spell would immediately end your Long Rest.

Nov 25, 2017 at 18:26 | comment | added | kviiri | @mattdm In principle, probably not. In practice, I'd be unlikely to care I guess.
Nov 25, 2017 at 13:13 | comment | added | mattdm | As a DM, would you allow this when a resource isn't really being saved? Say, someone showing up for a one-shot saying "oh, I had spell slots left over from yesterday so I cast Darkvision and Mage Armor before the adventure began right before the end of the long rest I took"?
Nov 25, 2017 at 9:27 | comment | added | András | @enkryptor most spells can be cast in a few minutes at most, while the long rest can be interrupted for 1 hour.
Nov 25, 2017 at 9:21 | comment | added | enkryptor | Isn't casting spells listed as a "strenuous" activity, which interrupts long rest?

Nov 25, 2017 at 8:42 | comment | added | NathanS | That's a good point about saving up a spell slot. I was thinking more that if you had one left over so that it's not wasted, which may happen if the rest of the party took the brunt of the damage in a previous encounter and are all out of healing...
