Feb 20, 2018 at 17:31 comment added TylerH @KorvinStarmast That was going to be my question; if there's a cleric, and especially if they are the kind of party that prefers to max out the experience they earn per session, they might decide to face the odds and take a bunch of skeletons out before leaving, not realizing that more skeletons are piling in behind them.
Feb 20, 2018 at 17:30 comment added KorvinStarmast Does the cleric still have the channel divinity/turn undead available for this part of the adventure, or was that expended during the boss fight?
Feb 20, 2018 at 17:12 comment added SevenSidedDie I removed the "any tips" portion tacked onto the bottom. It's too vague to be able to answer in our Q&A design, and distracts from the main question. We also have a one-post-one-question policy.

Feb 20, 2018 at 15:28 comment added Ingolendil @Alex I would appreciate any input. Roleplay is the focus of the game I run after all so you're more than welcome to share your thoughts.
Feb 20, 2018 at 15:13 comment added Alex Would it be okay to challenge your frame a bit and give a roleplay-styled answer on how to make the encounter feel like you want it to, or are you only looking for number-crunching answers giving you exact amounts?
Feb 20, 2018 at 15:05 comment added Ingolendil @SeriousBri I expect them to have expended all spell slots during the boss. Other than that they have access to the Thunderclap cantrip and a grenade of acid, but AoE effects can generally affect both PCs and NPCs so I will not balance with them in mind because I like the tension of having to play around the caster's range and positioning that rewards them with easy kills if they do.
Feb 20, 2018 at 14:46 comment added SeriousBri What spells does the party have access to? I am not overly familiar with the spells but some damage aura's effectively render 1hp minions completely redundant no matter how many appear, especially if they can hide in a corner near a door where enemies have to enter the aura before they can attack. I know that tactic would be first on my mind way before leaving unless the crypt was closing (Once I realised the HP of course).

Feb 20, 2018 at 14:27 comment added Rubiksmoose @Ingolendil I'm with you on the CR system being difficult to work with 100%, but this sounds like a question that is too opinion-based at the moment maybe.
Feb 20, 2018 at 14:24 comment added Ingolendil @Rubiksmoose Experience I imagine, i can hardly be the only one to want to create an encounter that isn't covered by CR. Terrain, homebrew monsters, party makeup and resources are nuanced variables that are, in my less-than-experienced opinion, insufficiently covered by rigid tables. I don't expect a definitive number, just educated guesses and arguments by more experienced DMs than me.
