Jan 21, 2022 at 1:09 comment added Valraven I'm not familiar with Curse of Strahd, and only nominally familiar with Ravenloft itself, so I'm curious about the nature of the limitations on Strahd's domain- does he not control them? Are they imposed by some third party, or is he the one who has altered magic in this way? I infer that if he needs a way to escape Borogravia that he doesn't control them, but I'm curious if that's the case. Either way, if you can escape once Strahd is dead, that simply means that he needs to die for the key to work. Then he can be carried through the portal and revived--he just needs a trusted servant.

Jul 18, 2019 at 23:59 comment added John Clifford This is a good answer and pretty much what I expected. I suppose the salient point is that the key doesn't have to actually work, Strahd only has to believe it will (to justify him pulling in the druid). I liked the idea of having him become a recurring villain in the campaign, but that isn't a necessity.
