Nov 25, 2019 at 6:14 | comment | added | Please stop being evil | @mattdm yep, it's pretty weird! As far as I can tell the rules only explicitly mandate that this happens and works this way for stealth checks, but disguise kit checks, forgery kit checks, and deception checks to pull off a disguise all seem like things which would take similar implementations. The idea that there's nothing that suggests this is wrong, though, you should check PHB 177 and also my answer.
Nov 25, 2019 at 4:00 | comment | added | mattdm | Boon of Fate applies when the check is made. It's true that the result of that check is used for a span of time, but there's nothing at all that suggests it can be later increased.
Nov 25, 2019 at 3:56 | comment | added | mattdm | Never mind quibbing about what "game feature" means. The idea that an ability check can be cumulatively added to over the course of a round is... extraordinary.
Oct 1, 2019 at 0:10 | comment | added | T.J.L. | I'm not sure what "a bad place" is supposed to mean. You have excluded epic boons from "game features". I asked you what they are. You're the one trying to define them as something other than "game features", I'm asking you to provide the parameters of that definition.
Sep 30, 2019 at 22:49 | comment | added | Please stop being evil | They are part of supersets like "things characters can have" and "nouns" and "D&D things" and "DMG resources for player characters" and "XP-dependent stuff you get" and "late-game content", if that's what you are asking about. The idea that they have to be in a superset or are only in one superset or something isn't accurate, though.
Sep 30, 2019 at 22:45 | comment | added | Please stop being evil | @T.J.L. ?? No, I just think your question comes from a bad place and you should maybe examine that. If you want me to answer your question literally the answer is '"epic boons, the same as if you house rule then to be included in the set of things that are 'game features'". I mean, it's obvious that whether or not epic boons count as game features has absolutely nothing to do with how they work or what they are-- that's described in the intro to epic boons in the DMG-- so it's hard to take your question at face value.
Sep 30, 2019 at 22:01 | comment | added | T.J.L. | So, you don't have an answer for my question?
Sep 30, 2019 at 21:10 | comment | added | Please stop being evil | @T.J.L. You say that like "game feature" is a phrase with meaning outside the arbitrary dictates of 5e rules. It's not. We know what 'orange' means in normal language and we can use that to make determinations but 'game feature'-- like 'class feature' and 'attack roll'-- don't mean anything in real life because they are not things in real life, or, if those phrases do mean things, they mean something entirely apart from what they do in 5th edition-- the 'natural language' of 'game feature', for example, would be something like "quick "or "easy to learn ". Here it is something else.
Sep 30, 2019 at 18:40 | comment | added | T.J.L. | If epic boons are not a game feature, then what are they?
Sep 30, 2019 at 17:32 | comment | added | Please stop being evil | @Someone_Evil That contest is a check-- when you compare your total to someone else's perception roll, that's a check. You just get to reuse your total. In the same way they could add to rat #3's perception roll, they must be able to add to your stealth, because that's how an opposed check works. You keep your total from the last check, but that doesn't prevent things from being added or subtracted from it-- why would it? There's no rule that says that.
Sep 30, 2019 at 17:28 | comment | added | Please stop being evil | @DavidCoffron Fair enough, I was thinking of that as a restriction on your starting resources rather than what you could do.
Sep 30, 2019 at 17:27 | comment | added | Please stop being evil | In order for something else to be added to that list, there would be a rule somewhere that said something like 'widgets are game features' or 'widgets are game features that' or similar. 'widgets are like feats except that...' or similar would also work.
Sep 30, 2019 at 17:23 | comment | added | Rubiksmoose | @thedarkwanderer ah gotcha. I can see where you are coming from now. Though I actually read the "includes" as being open ended personally but I can see how other might read it differently :)
Sep 30, 2019 at 17:20 | comment | added | Please stop being evil | @Rubiksmoose The DMG errata says "Different game features can affect a target at the same time. But when two or more game features have the same name, only the effects of one of them—the most potent one—apply while the durations of the effects overlap... Game features include spells, class features, feats, racial traits, monster abilities, and magic items." Since 'include' definitely doesn't exclude missing options from the list, we have to rely on the fact that no other options are added to the list to say that these aren't game features.
Sep 30, 2019 at 17:16 | comment | added | Rubiksmoose | How exactly do you think "game features" is meant to be interpreted if you don't think this counts? What kind of signpost are you looking for in order for something to count?
Sep 30, 2019 at 14:29 | comment | added | findusl | I like how you did the whole math. As if a few zeros more or less even matter.
Sep 28, 2019 at 13:45 | comment | added | David Coffron | @NautArch Related: What does 'ally' mean, as a game term?
Sep 28, 2019 at 13:32 | comment | added | NotArch | Are simulacra considered separate allies or just things created by an ally?
Sep 28, 2019 at 12:21 | comment | added | David Coffron | This sounds like more than 4 allies to me... but that's just me
Sep 28, 2019 at 7:59 | comment | added | Someone_Evil♦ | I fail to see how the total can be added to after the check has been made. The Hiding rules say that "[the] checks total is contested by...". The check has already been made and set and can't be added to by things like Boon of Fate. I also think the exclusion of Boons from game features is a tenuous one.
Sep 28, 2019 at 2:35 | comment | added | KorvinStarmast | 3^67200 simulacra There may not be that much ice in the world. the material components are consumed. ;) And, you may need infinite cheese to feed all of those rats. 8^D
