In early editions of D&D, each class had its own unique XP table (thieves needed fewer XP to reach a given level than magic-users) and these tables included titles for each level. (dungeonsdragons.fandom.com/wiki/Level_title) "Name level" was when you got the "final" title, usually 9th level, which was also the same time that you started to attract followers (as opposed to going out to look for people to hire). | |
