You should be explicit about the lack of upside (as compared to Ritual Caster). Anyway, that reminds me of something else that confused me, since you bring it up a few times—why do you need to carry find familiar again? Isn’t the spell permanent unless the familiar dies or whatever?

Nov 9, 2020 at 17:46 | comment | added | Exempt-Medic | @KRyan Magic Initiate gets you one spell; Ritual Caster can get you any of the fifteen I named and they can be cast without using any spell slots. I also explicitly called out that Magic Initiate heavily limits the number of times you could actually cast find familiar. That said, I'll add something about how losing one level in your spell casting progression is quite a lot.
Nov 9, 2020 at 17:28 | comment | added | KRyan | Why is Magic Initiate worse than Ritual Caster? The downsides you list for Magic Initiate apply just the same for Ritual Caster unless I’ve forgotten something. Also, I think you are badly underselling how much of a loss being delayed a level on your cleric spellcasting is. Overcasting is a whole lot worse than having proper higher-level spells. Using a feat/ASI is a large cost too, of course, but I don’t think it’s “obviously” or “far and away” greater than dipping wizard.
