Jun 15, 2021 at 3:43 comment added ikegami @Ifusaso There is no "throw" and "hurl" action, so hurl and throw have their standard English definitions, and they are therefore synonymous. In any case, the item's description makes it clear that you no longer wield a weapon you no longer hold.
Jun 15, 2021 at 2:13 comment added Ifusaso 'he-him' The weapon isn't "thrown" (as per the function of what throwing a weapon is). It is magically used to deal melee strike damage. While "hurl" and throw are synonyms, thrown is a game term when used in the Doubling Ring item (while hurl is the context of the spell HotA but is not a game term). Furthermore, specific (a specific spell that does a thing) beats general (when you throw a weapon, it is no longer wielded) so that's not particularly relevant anyway.
Jun 15, 2021 at 1:37 comment added ikegami The description of Doubling Rings explicitly states that a weapon ceases to be wielded the moment it's thrown. Added this to my answer.

Jun 4, 2021 at 0:26 comment added ikegami Do note that I'd be perfectly fine having it use a d8, but the question was about RAW. It would make thematic sense, and it would be the same as using the boring Longspear.

Jun 3, 2021 at 19:34 comment added Pantheos Max Without regard to any other point you make, a staff does either 1d4 (wielded one-handed) or 1d8 (wielded two-handed), but never 1d6 as in 2e.aonprd.com/Weapons.aspx?ID=12
Jun 3, 2021 at 14:33 comment added Ifusaso 'he-him' Well re-reading the Two-Hand trait, I agree with one of your comments.
Jun 3, 2021 at 14:09 comment added ikegami Re "nothing about Hand of the Apprentice says it applies Traits." This makes no sense. A trait that sets the weapon damage die is pertinent whether HotA mentions traits or not.
Jun 3, 2021 at 14:03 comment added ikegami @Ifusaso Re "even if you're wielding a weapon 2-handed", The OP asked for RAW, not imprecise approximations
Jun 3, 2021 at 13:46 comment added Ifusaso 'he-him' " You can use this component while holding something in your hand" and "You're wielding an item any time you're holding it in the number of hands needed to use it effectively." generally combine to mean that you can cast spells with Somatic components even if you're wielding a weapon 2-handed. This does not make this answer incorrect, as nothing about Hand of the Apprentice says it applies Traits.
