Sep 24, 2021 at 12:46 comment added Thomas Markov @Torbilicious An improvised weapon does not count as a weapon for the purposes of features that require you to be holding or wielding a weapon, otherwise such prerequisites would be totally meaningless, as you could just say that anything is a weapon.
Sep 24, 2021 at 12:45 comment added Torbilicious @ShadowRanger Could you not treat the grimoire as an improvised weapon? "An Improvised Weapon includes any object you can wield in one or two hands, such as broken glass, a table leg, a frying pan, a wagon wheel, or a dead Goblin."
Sep 24, 2021 at 4:51 comment added Ryan C. Thompson Other than casting non-material spells, I've found that in battles where the objective is anything more complicated than "kill 'em all", having a free hand comes in handy quite often.
Sep 24, 2021 at 3:55 comment added ShadowRanger @ThomasMarkov: Although oddly, by the wording of War Caster, it only fixes it because the Fernian Ash Staff counts as a weapon. If the other thing you were stacking with was neither weapon nor shield, War Caster wouldn't help (apparently you can't use mage combat training to juggle books or orbs or whatever while casting spells; if you can't kill someone or defend yourself with it, you can't cast spells around it).
Sep 23, 2021 at 21:40 comment added Thomas Markov @Kallenz Yes, war caster would fix that issue entirely, plus it’s really a “can’t go wrong with this” choice for a wizard.
Sep 23, 2021 at 21:34 comment added Kallenz @ Thomas, thank you so much for the added note. Would the War Caster feature help such a wizard?
Sep 23, 2021 at 21:29 comment added Thomas Markov @Kallenz Yeah, these items work together just fine in most cases, however, see the note I added about spells with somatic components but no material components.
Sep 23, 2021 at 21:28 comment added Kallenz That was exactly my question due to my misinterpretation of the wording for this magic item. Thank you! According to your answer, my wizard who is already in poses of a Fernian Ash Staff, will become even more powerful once he puts his hands in one of those arcane grimoires, correct?
