Jan 18, 2022 at 22:09 comment added Pyrotechnical @Kirt Once we started involving the Ethereal Plane, I think it becomes relevant to point out that D&D is not a physics simulator. Thus, for the world of D&D, I'm reticent to get on board with the notion that you're not in the water as described in your example. By the description of how the Ethereal Plane 'works' from the DMG, it sounds like you are in the water, you just don't realize it.
Jan 18, 2022 at 21:41 comment added Kirt @Pyrotechnical However, suppose we grant your assertion that living things are simultaneously present in both the Prime and BE, and that the BE version of the living thing is thus included in TH's permission to cross the dome. You still haven't explained why you think the dome itself as an object is present in the BE, since neither the spell's description nor the DMG says it is. The spell grants you permission to cross the dome itself, not the effect of the dome on the BE.
Jan 18, 2022 at 21:28 comment added Kirt @Pyrotechnical Nor do I think that this effect implies that the living thing is actually simultaneously on two planes. I can stand on the shore and have my shadow be cast on the water - that I have an effect on the water doesn't mean that I am physically in the water, and that the aura of living creatures creates a barrier on the Ethereal without them being physically present is lore that predates 5e.
Jan 18, 2022 at 21:26 comment added Kirt @Pyrotechnical I'm not saying that the permissiveness applies only on the Prime - I'm saying it applies only on the plane in which the hut exists as an object, that is, the plane in which it was cast. I don't think I neglected to mention the effects of living things, since I devoted an entire 140-word paragraph to how living things on the Prime would act as a barrier on BE, even to elementals.
Jan 18, 2022 at 19:26 comment added Pyrotechnical Thus, if living beings on the Material can impact on the overlapping Ethereal, it is reasonable to state that those beings exist on both, which kind of torpedoes your argument that the character isn't on the Ethereal when the Tiny Hut spell is cast.
Jan 18, 2022 at 19:26 comment added Pyrotechnical I feel like you're stretching a lot to make this inference. The Tiny Hut spell states, "Creatures and objects within the dome when you cast this spell can move through it freely." As you seem to be interpreting this, this means that this permissiveness only applies to creatures on the Material Plane. Interestingly, though, you do make reference to the fact that force effects on the Prime have effects on the overlapping Ethereal, but you neglect that living beings do as well.

Jan 18, 2022 at 18:27 comment added KorvinStarmast @geckon If one is using the DMG as authoritative, in terms of how it describes the ethereal plane (the treatment isn't vary large) this answer is valid in terms of answering your question. If one treats the DMG as less than authoritative, then it's not as iron clad.

Jan 18, 2022 at 17:21 comment added Kirt @geckon There is no question of precedence, because only the DMG rule applies. The spell description explains that you may pass through the dome, and you may, wherever the dome is. But when you are in the BE, you are not passing through the dome, because the dome is not there. Only the effect of the dome is, and that is described by the DMG.

Jan 18, 2022 at 13:21 comment added geckon This is exactly why I asked. What takes precedence? The fact that "Creatures and objects within the dome when you cast this spell can move through it freely" or that it is a semi-sphere of magical force?
