IIRC the RAW of the Mercirual weapons alluded to it working for straight-bladed weapons. Otherwise, if the DM doesn't want to allow anything but RAW regardless there would only be the three allowed period.

I've never seen anything that specifically bans short swords from being mercurial, but the wording does seem to hint that it should be left to long sword and such. Anyone ever seen someone mention mercurial short swords? If that's viable enough, then I suppose a mercurial dragonsplit isn't far off.
