Sort of follow on from my previous question.

Shields take an action to don or doff.

In the previous question it was discussed that the reason for this might be needing to strap the shield to your arm/unstrap it.

If your other arm is occupied (caught in a trap, or temporarily turned evil), can you don or doff a shield with just one arm free?

The reason I think you might not be able to is the difficulty of handling the straps with the hand going into the shield.

The rules don't specify; it's up to the DM

As you've noted in your question, the rules specify the time required to don or doff a piece of armor or a shield. However, the rules don't state anything else about what's needed to don or doff armor or shields - specifically, they don't specify whether donning or doffing armor or a shield requires one or both hands to do.

As such, it's up to the DM to decide whether a shield can be donned or doffed with just one hand. For armor, it seems likely that the DM would rule that both hands are needed to put it on or take it off. Shields are a bit more of a gray area, so the DM would ultimately need to make a decision on the matter for themselves.

I understand this is where proficiency kicks in.

I suppose a proficient shield user can drop his shield with a free action EDIT: no- he cannot. The phb specifically says that don or doff a shield costs one action. and could equip it single handed with one action (but since he used his action to don the shield, he will not attack this turn).

So a proficient shield user will be able to don the shield with one hand? Yes!

Now: someone non-proficient with shield is trying do use it in any way- he will be clumsy with it, require both hands, require dex saves to attempt to gain bonus AC from the shield... and so on.

It is all up to you DM. The rules don’t mention any of it. But it seems quite reasonable for me that he may don the shield with one hand.

  • \$\begingroup\$ @J.E no. The rules doesn’t contemplate such. Hence it is up to the dm to determine whether or not one hand don of shield is possible. \$\endgroup\$ Commented Jul 14, 2018 at 14:42

\$\begingroup\$ I would say, it depends on the type of shield. Is it a strap on shield? (No), or a center grip... it really depends on the dm, cuz the are a wide variety of shields, since cash be "equiped) easily, others take a bit more effort. \$\endgroup\$
