In Burning Wheel, some lifepaths get a fraction of the resources or skill points of another lifepath. Not all of the cases give an explicit rule of rounding that fraction up or down, and fractional points are of no use in the rules system.

Does the game have a default rule for rounding in a specific way, or should one simply default to the standard convention of rounding fractions to the nearest integer and halves up?

Burning Wheel is not a game where things are handed to you on a silver platter. Most commonly when rounding is mentioned, it rounds unfavorably for player characters. A reasonable default would be to round down for resources and skills.

  • Character Burning numbers that round down: roots for opening skills, all attributes that involve taking an average, and starting Resources and Circles.

  • Contacts “always round point costs up”.

There are very few exceptions that I can think of offhand:

  • Spacing between Physical Tolerances is half Forte rounded up. PT math is called out as “funky” in the text.
  • There's the die trait (a trait that breaks a rule) Hardened that lets you round up when factoring Health.
