D&D 4th Edition has [Fortune cards][1] and it's a nice reward for a character to have a "permanent new ability" that's not so powerful but it's cool and fits with the character. You can make your own "fortune power" that fits your campaign/world. As said before, rewarding a flying mount or a powerful ally or a little fief will also be very appreciated by the players.
