We had a discussion at our table regarding the Bestial Soul feature of the Path of the Beast barbarian. The feature says

> When you jump, you can make a Strength (Athletics) check and extend your jump by a number of feet equal to the check’s total. You can make this special check only once per turn.

In the PHB it says
>**High Jump**. When you make a high jump, you leap into the air a number of feet equal to 3 + your Strength modifier if you move at least 10 feet on foot immediately before the jump. When you make a standing high jump, you can jump only half that distance. Either way, each foot you clear on the jump costs a foot of movement. In some circumstances, your DM might allow you to make a Strength (Athletics) check to jump higher than you normally can.

It feels like the ability is only intended to apply to the long jump but it does not say that specifically. When reading online discussions about the ability they are all about the long jump, not the high jump.

So why does or doesn't it effect the high jump?

(also, is the "class-feature" tag used for subclass features?)
