In Adventurer's League, everything you can buy is explicitly stated to have an upcharge/discount if there is one. And in every 5th edition game I've played in, prices given by the DM are law - simply to cut down on meaningless timewasting of players attempting to haggle with every single purchase. If there is to be story-driven haggling, it should be made very clear to players that haggling and/or getting ripped off is an option.
Jul 11, 2017 at 18:37 comment added doppelgreener Unless I've misread, you seem to be advocating that the GM emotionally abuse the players (by proxy of the game, but the same nevertheless) to make them feel like fools for making a decision they didn't know the scope of. Have you experienced this actually working well, or do you have experience of this working well that you can cite? Have you experienced player/GM trust remaining in place afterwards without inflicting abused gamer syndrome?
