Aug 31, 2018 at 14:25 | comment | added | Pyrotechnical | @RutherRendommeleigh your premise is stipulated upon the notion that Healing Word's strength is a problem. The video I linked wants HW to be a 3rd level spell, which I consider excessive. Indeed, opinions on the matter vary. But if you consider the RAW the baseline for balance, the proposed change unbalances things in a substantial manner. Whether that imbalance is a problem is a table to table issue with regards to how that table feels about whack a mole style play and the inherent strength of HW.
Aug 31, 2018 at 14:14 | comment | added | Ruther Rendommeleigh | You make a good argument for the houserule changing the balance, but I fail to see how it would unbalance the game. Specifically, you call Healing Word "the strongest spell in the game", so wouldn't nerfing it bring it more in line with other spells? Similarly, there seems to be a consensus that the encounter balancing guidelines tend to err on the side of "too easy", so wouldn't this change also shift them towards better balance?

Aug 31, 2018 at 13:22 | comment | added | hohenheim | I edited my question to include another houserule of my campaign, namely that NPCs could get death saves as well, depending on their importance.
