There are a bunch of different systems available with varying levels of crunch and flexibility and some of the more flexible ones can handle things like wanting to be a skeleton necromancer without too much difficulty or rebalancing required. You can certainly have fun hacking DND-5E, but it has a lot of moving parts and it's easy to end up breaking things pretty badly. | |

I only suggested most of it bc it seems OP has played enough times to be driven mad by something. And so probably is quite used to basic mechanics | |

That said, some of the downvotes might just be for suggesting "let the characters be OP if you want", but I do think it's somewhat supported by your own experiences as described in the answer. It might be better to elaborate on those experiences and how it has affected that game as a whole - did you have fun? did you have trouble balancing encounters? etc. | |
