True Neutral explicitly covers both categories, those who truly embrace balance and those who don’t know and/or don’t care. No edition of D&D (to my knowledge) “asserts” that animals are positively devoted to and aligned with “balance” or whatever. True Neutral is just the alignment that includes creatures without moral or ethical inclinations (or capability).

Sep 20, 2019 at 7:58 | comment | added | Zaibis | Oh, so "If the creature didn't worship a deity, its soul departs to the plane corresponding to its alignment." is a change in the universe of forgotten realms. Wasn't it before in forgotten realms, that these souls of not worshipping a deity would travel to the ninehells and become property of Azmodeus?
Sep 19, 2019 at 13:39 | comment | added | aherocalledFrog | Don't most of the mythologies have a neutral Death-domain deity who's job is to manage souls that don't have another place to go? 4e introduced the Raven Queen.
Sep 19, 2019 at 13:10 | comment | added | Daniel R. Collins | If lore from prior editions is useful, then it might help to note that in editions 0th, 1st, and 2nd, spells like raise dead were restricted to PC-races only, and explicitly noted those as the ones with souls/spirits.
