May 13, 2020 at 2:16 comment added user-63873687 @DM_with_secrets Then they don't have spell slots to spam any other level 2 spell either.
May 13, 2020 at 2:16 comment added user-63873687 @Redrascal Then I guess you are aware that almost anything you do will be imbalanced. This is nothing but a buff for the EK. So long as you are aware of that, then I don't see a problem.
May 13, 2020 at 2:14 comment added user-63873687 @Pyrotechnical I think you are making an assumption that I am not. If you want to make a smite spell, then it needs to use the smite spell as a base instead of buffing already powerful spells.
May 12, 2020 at 19:21 comment added Pyrotechnical -1 your final summary hinges upon the action economy of this spell being broken, but does not address the fact that the querent seeks to craft a spell which is similar to the Paladin smite spell series; all of which rely upon Bonus Action castings.
May 12, 2020 at 15:57 comment added NotArch caapult is another spell, but at 2nd level it actually deals 4d8 and half on successful save.
May 12, 2020 at 7:13 comment added MikeQ There are three 2nd level spells that deal 3d8 damage: Aganazzar’s Scorcher, Shatter, and Mind spike. Targeted creatures take half damage on successful saves.
May 12, 2020 at 7:11 comment added Redrascal And yes, I'll admit that my main consideration here is for my Eldritch Knight player. It's possible that this spell isn't balanced well for other instances, part of why I asked for OP combo's people could think of essentially, but at least with the example EK L7 player he only has 2 level 2 spell slots a day... While even at it's current boosted damage over what it should be that's a rather big drain on his abilities for the damage boost generated. The totals are higher than a "pure" spell cast because they include the melee strikes still.
May 12, 2020 at 7:09 comment added Redrascal @DM_with_secrets in hindsight I just realised I was comparing again blinding smite (3rd level) when I meant to be comparing against branding smite (2nd level). I'd at minimum then drop it to 2d8 base damage, maybe drop the die as well to match blinding. Can I get your thoughts on if the secondary effect of the rather minor splash + picking your element is good counterbalance to the branding effect (granted more niche but it's the most immediate comparison)?
May 12, 2020 at 7:06 comment added Redrascal Can I ask what the two spells are that "only 2 level 2 spells hitting for 3d8. Both of them are AoE, but they both require enemies to make a save."? You didn't mention them specifically in your post just mentioned attributes of them
May 12, 2020 at 6:19 comment added DM_with_secrets (I'm not saying the damage is balanced, just that the mechanic has precedent)
May 12, 2020 at 5:53 comment added DM_with_secrets "What's more, you can cast it every round in combat and still make a full attack." The character using this will almost certainly not have enough spells slots for that. Usually smites are for paladins, but in this case it's an eldritch knight, who has even few spell slots. I suppose that technically this means it's on the wizard spell list, but if your wizard is in melee they probably need all the help they can get :P
May 12, 2020 at 5:47 comment added DM_with_secrets "The charge only activates on a hit, allowing you to keep retrying for free until it hits. If you miss with any other spell, it's gone!" That's not true - this spell is using the same mechanic as the other smite spells.
