about the sidekick thing
|
Nov 22, 2023 at 0:06 | comment | added | stevenjackson121 | "nor is there any way to play as a monster in this edition" is no longer true as of Tasha's (Sidekick rules). It's different enough (in the sense of restricting your class choices to the special sidekick classes) I don't know if it would fit what OP wants, but it is an option that technically meets their criteria.

reorganizing to emphasize the plasmoids up-front, since they’re the only actual answer to the question

Aug 23, 2022 at 15:47 | comment | added | Thomas Markov | Updated for the plasmoid race from Spelljammer, but I leave it to you to "salt to taste", as it were. (You might consider putting the new 5e material up front since OP mentions playing in a 5e game.)

Aug 18, 2021 at 18:09 | comment | added | KRyan | @F1000003 Sure, but that’s just a particular restatement of rule 0, from a time when rule 0 wasn’t nearly as “assumed default” as it is now. I’m only counting things that actually tell you how it should work.
Aug 18, 2021 at 17:40 | comment | added | F1000003 | In OD&D, Men & Magic, p8: Other Character Types: There is no reason that players cannot be allowed to play as virtually anything, provided they begin relatively weak and work up to the top, i.e., a player wishing to be a Dragon would have to begin as let us say, a "young" one and progress upwards in the usual manner, steps being predetermined by the campaign referee.
