Sandbox role-playing is about promoting freedom. If players have a huge number of choices, or the choices are undefined and up to the players to conceive, then the game can be said to have a sandbox approach.

"Sandboxing" is often regarded as the opposite of "railroading", in which players have little to no influence over the story, or very few meaningful choices to make as a part of the story.
