Mar 27, 2022 at 11:42 comment added Nobody the Hobgoblin @PeterCordes: I agree. And I think this also solves the AoE issue with fireball wich burns creatures or objects, as the location certainly is also within the blast radius.
Mar 27, 2022 at 5:51 comment added Peter Cordes As Kirt's answer rightly points out, attacking creature, object or location is different from only being able to attack a creature or object. Apparently, strictly RAW you attack the location the magic effect is in. Fire Bolt can't do that. (A sensible DM could rule that's stupid and let players do it anyway, but that's not what RAW says.) Your reasoning makes sense if you didn't consider the "or location" thing as relevant, that something has to give for the AC to be relevant (not just saves from AoE effects), but turns out location, location, location :P

Mar 26, 2022 at 21:30 comment added Slagmoth @Marq You would have to target the magical effect with Dispel Magic and since it is not defined as a creature or object but Dispel Magic says you don't have to see, hear or in any other way detect said effect so apparently you just know all effects within range that you can target. LOLz... these devs...

Mar 26, 2022 at 20:20 comment added NotArch Fireball requires creatures and objects, and unseen is neither. Having a really hard time seeing the case for it working. I'm really not comfortable with the assumptions that you make in this answer. Please back them up if you're going to use them.
Mar 26, 2022 at 20:17 comment added Nobody the Hobgoblin @NautArch: see the whole discussion on what is a target of fireball I linked to -- you can consider any creature and object in range a lowercase target. The term is just not very well defined. I do agree, that this may be subject to DM adjucation, however.
Mar 26, 2022 at 20:11 comment added NotArch How does fireball work? The servant is neither an object nor a creature and won't proc the damage. I think you're right with attacks ,but even that should be looked at more carefully with the issue of things you can target.

added targeting and removed force half-sentence as jack pointed out
Mar 26, 2022 at 19:51 comment added Nobody the Hobgoblin @Jack: I removed it, I think it is not central to the argument if it is a force or a magical effect or whatever, thanks for pointing it out.

Mar 26, 2022 at 19:45 comment added Marq Maybe Dispel Magic also deserves a mention?
