The animals tend to have a very limited point of view and are driven entirely by their current emotional state, except for a few places where they clearly aren't so limited -- and in those cases, it's plot-relevant that this is the case. Animals acting a little too thoughtfully is a clue that something odd is going on and you might want to investigate further.
