I recall one frequently used device in police procedurals is the innocent bystander who doesn't want their spouse to know they were cheating on them, so they lie about where they were ("no, I wasn't at that bar last week", or "no, I wasn't close enough to Mrs. Jones yesterday to see if she was acting unusually"). Children lie to stay out of trouble ("No, I wasn't under the bleachers during the game", but they are lying so they don't have to admit they were smoking rather than lying to protect whoever killed the new kid and left his body under bleacher #3).
