Nov 18, 2015 at 14:38 comment added nitsua60 I think it's a great answer and have +1'd it, but I worry about the reproduction of that much of spell lists. Should I be copyright-concerned, or is this a small enough slice?
Nov 17, 2015 at 20:29 comment added KorvinStarmast @DaleM Just a matter of style ... "is always overpowered compared to the wrong spell" uses that "overpowered" which isn't the point. "Is more powerful than" is a clearer way to make your point (which I 100% agree with).
Nov 17, 2015 at 0:37 comment added Ceribia I agree with your assessment that Fear is not the best spell in all situations but this really isn't what I was getting at (though my question may have been unclear). What I'm wondering is if the, "save once or suck", aspect is common to spells at this level or if Fear is an outlier. That said, thanks for pointing out that we were playing Fear wrong! That is an important difference and greatly changes things. If the monster is either dashing away or attacking, then attacking the monster becomes much more difficult and, overall, it looks to be in line with spells like Hypnotic Suggestion.
Nov 17, 2015 at 0:34 comment added Premier Bromanov @doppelgreener I think that's fair, mortal peril can be present if your group chooses it to be, like if your party of level 10s only uses a single dagger attack every round or if they blow all of their spells in the first room
Nov 17, 2015 at 0:25 comment added doppelgreener I've made an adjustment I think will help. How's that sit?

adjusted this paragraph to reflect the broader situation, some cases that weren't taken into account (well rested but you're overextending yourself and the DM isn't just going to make it easy) and come off as less judgemental and condemning of others
Nov 17, 2015 at 0:21 comment added doppelgreener Your paragraph about the purpose of encounters and how OK it is to be in mortal peril might need reflection on how can I suggest the DM stop trying to kill us? - which suggests there's other reasons to be in mortal peril, like the players overextending themselves, and the attitude being that the characters should be facing mortal peril more often than "very, very rarely" - and seems to blame it on the DM being a sadist assuming the players have rested recently. That paragraph could do with adjustment.

Nov 17, 2015 at 0:12 comment added nitsua60 It's so sad that "Shoot the Bloody Spellcaster in the Face" was lost in playtest....
