On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Every election has three phases:

  1. Nomination
  2. Primary
  3. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

Joshua Aslan Smith for Moderator

I have both the expertise and the temperament to be an effective moderator for RPG.SE. I believe that I would be an asset to our community as we continue to grow helping to maintaining our high level of quality for both question and answers. Below are what I consider to be my most important qualifications for this role:

  • I have over 22k Site rep and make use of the privileges I’ve earned on weekly, if not daily basis.

  • I regularly check and use our Meta to improve our site quality.

  • I am able to maintain a cool head and always treat users, no matter my disagreements with them, with respect.

  • I am highly active from 8am – 5pm EST/EDT in America (UTC -5/-4) and am in Main Chat daily

I'll be hanging out in the election chat if anyone has any questions they would like to ask me.

Hi! I'm Wax Eagle. I've been around here for a while, and am most active in the D&D 4e and 5e tags though I read, welcome new users and vote on questions/answers in a lot of other tags.

A bit about me first, I am most active here, though I moderate two other sites on the Stack Exchange network (Christianity and Gardening). I'm also very active in our site chat, and run a 5e game for several of the site regulars on Roll20.

My theory or moderation is pretty consistent with what you already see on this site. I'm in favor of early closure for clarification. I believe one of the best ways we can turn a new user into a long term site user is to close their poor question and help them workshop it into a great question.

I'd like to be a moderator of this site, in large part to keep doing what I'm already doing, welcoming new users, answering question, closing questions that need it, answering meta questions and helping to direct the site via meta. However, I'd also like to help with the deeper maintenance side of the site. Comment cleanup, spam destruction and other mundane and boring tasks that make up the daily life of a moderator.

Role-playing Games SE is my "home" Stack and I'd be pleased to serve as a moderator! I'm a very active user, with 90k+ reputation, interest in policy and curation, and the time to do the job justice.

I see the moderation team as a stable core, lending continuity to the community's past consensus on policy and traditions, while nurturing the community's self-moderation and consensus seeking. I've been here since shortly after the beginning, giving me a long view of the site that's useful for that role.

Ironically, that means I'd be stepping back a bit. I often use my flags, comments, and 10k+ votes to highlight things I'm unsure of, trusting that when I'm wrong, other votes will bring out the truth. With a mod's "super votes" I'd be using a lighter touch with these heavier tools, knowing others will step up.

My RPG experience is broad with a few deep spots of expertise, since my tastes are wide-ranging. As a mod I would continue to speak for a balanced, inclusive approach to our hobby. In this hobby I'm always learning, whether it's an RPG's dynamics or what the Stack needs from me. (Especially: when to keep my peace!)

Thanks for your consideration. :)

This election is over.
