Can I use a spell onto make an Attack of Opportunity Attack?

In theThe Player's Handbook, Attack of Opportunity only describes that a melee attack is allowed againstwhen making an Attack of Opportunity Attack. Does this only mean melee weapon attacks, or does it allow some spells? Also assuming that if it does, then only spells with a casting time of 1 action, right?
