What "danger" is it referring to?

The "danger" is the ensuing conflict where one or more opponents are going to try and take you out. For mental conflicts, using Careful to determine turn order rewards those who pay attention to what things that are being said, how they are being said, body language, and so forth.
This means that when a Roman Senator is about to try and make you look like a fool in the baths to undermine you with the rest of the Senate, you know what is about to happen and can react first.

\$\begingroup\$ Cool. I guess you could reword a Conflict as being "characters trying to make other characters impotent (powerless) in the situation." So I guess a mental Conflict is people trying to make you impotent through wits--embarrassing someone so they're laughed out of court, forcing them into confessing, etc. And in turn that means having a head-start in such a Conflict would be seeing that the opponent is trying to undermine you in some way: seeing the setup for embarrassment, being wary of the interrogator's tactics to force you to confess, and so on. \$\endgroup\$ Commented Jul 28, 2017 at 14:40
